Biography

Lachlan Giles is an Australian Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and one of the most respected technicians in modern grappling. Known for his analytical approach and highly detailed instruction, Giles built his reputation through years of consistent competition, coaching, and system-focused teaching. He developed a methodical, layered guard style that is widely regarded as one of the hardest to pass in no-gi jiu-jitsu, built around frames, inversions, and well-timed leg entanglements.

Giles achieved worldwide recognition at ADCC 2019, where he produced one of the most memorable runs in the event’s history. Competing as one of the smallest athletes in the absolute division, he heel hooked multiple heavyweight opponents on his way to a bronze medal. His performance became a defining moment in modern leglocking and showcased the effectiveness of precise, technical strategy against far larger opponents.

Beyond competition, Giles became an influential instructor through his teaching platform Submeta, offering structured programs, detailed systems, and curriculum-based learning that reflect his systematic approach. He continues to coach and produce educational material that has shaped how grapplers study positions such as the K-guard, waiter guard, and many others.

After his highly anticipated match with Marcelo Garcia in 2025, Giles officially retired from competition to focus fully on teaching, developing Submeta, and spending more time with his family. He remains one of the most respected minds in the sport and a key figure in the global development of no-gi technique.
