Biography

Joao Gabriel Rocha is a Brazilian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and a long-standing elite competitor in the heavyweight divisions. Known for his powerful, well-rounded style, he has earned major titles in both gi and no-gi competition while representing Soul Fighters.

Rocha is one of the most respected no-gi heavyweights of his era. His career includes a silver medal at the 2013 ADCC World Championship in the over 99kg division, confirming his status among the top submission grapplers in the world. Shortly after receiving his black belt that same year, he overcame a battle with cancer and made a remarkable return to high-level competition. His preferred submission is the rear naked choke, which accounts for many of his finishes.

Rocha continued to compete on major professional stages, including the inaugural Craig Jones Invitational in 2024. Competing in the over 80kg division, he opened the event with a strong win over William Tackett by unanimous decision, showcasing heavy wrestling pressure and dominant positional control. His run ended in the quarterfinals against Fellipe Andrew, but the performance reaffirmed his place as a dangerous threat in the modern submission-only circuit.
